3 ways to get home when you’re too drunk to drive

On Behalf of | Aug 31, 2021 | DUI |

Drunk driving is among the leading causes of traffic accidents, and it is considered a criminal offense in all states. If you are in a situation where you are too drunk to drive, taking alternative measures could save your life, in addition to avoiding possible jail time from a DUI arrest.

The best thing to do, of course, is to plan ahead. That way, you won’t have to think the issue through when it’s time to leave the party. Here are some options:

Get a designated driver

Appointing a designated driver is perhaps the best option if you have company. The designated driver is not supposed to drink any alcoholic beverages and should be responsible for driving you home. (In return, they usually get their meal and non-alcoholic drinks paid for by the rest of their party.)

Take a cab or use public transportation

If you are in no condition to drive, taking a cab could save you a lot of trouble. There are a ton of ride-hailing services to choose from, such as Uber and Lyft.

Using public transportation is also an option. For example, catch a bus or train if you are too drunk to drive yourself and have someone else pick your car for you.

Walk home

This is a no-brainer. If you are too drunk to drive, then you can choose to walk home. Distance, weather and security are factors you need to take into account before deciding to walk home. It is only viable if you are near your home and are not too drunk to stay on your feet.

Do not be part of the statistics

In 2019, more than 10,000 people died as a result of traffic accidents caused by drunk driving. Planning on how you intend to get home is essential if you are going drinking, and it could be the difference between life and death.

You would not want to face a DUI charge either, as it comes with numerous financial, social and legal headaches. Instead, be on the safe side and arrive home safely by taking these options if you are too drunk to drive. If you do make a mistake, however, and end up with a drunk driving charge, find out what it takes to defend your interests.
