Underage driver arrested for DUI by Athens-Clarke County Police

| Sep 12, 2012 | Underage DUI |

When Athens-Clarke County Police conduct traffic stops, they are not only informing drivers that they have violated traffic laws or that their vehicles’ lights might not be working properly, officers will also be looking for and documenting any type of suspicious activity or physical signs that a driver may be impaired.

Over the weekend, a University of Georgia student was arrested for underage DUI after police conducted a traffic stop and noticed that the student’s eyes were “watery and glassy.” The driver was pulled over by police after he allegedly failed to properly stop his vehicle at a red light.

According to the police report, the student did not stop his vehicle before the stop bar at the red light. The student was pulled over and was asked to provide an officer with his driver’s license and insurance card. The student apparently took too much time gathering his ID and insurance card, and during this time, an officer reported that the odor of alcohol was detected.

The student’s driver’s license showed that he was 20 years old. The UGA student was then asked if he had been drinking and he said that he did not consume any alcohol and was only dropping some of his friends off at an apartment before he was stopped by police. The driver said that his passengers had been drinking alcohol before he gave them a ride.

The student was then asked to take a field sobriety test and a breath test. The underage student allegedly had trouble keeping his balance during the field sobriety test and later admitted to drinking two beers. The student was also asked to take a breath test. However, officers claim that the student did not properly take the test in order to provide an accurate test result. He was arrested and charged with underage DUI.
