Why do divorce odds go up if one spouse has a long commute?

On Behalf of | Jul 30, 2025 | Divorce |

Did you know that your divorce odds are 40% higher if you have a commute of over 45 minutes? This is something that studies have found, and it applies to couples who have been together for a relatively short time. For instance, a couple that has the same situation but has been living with it for five years or more may not have elevated divorce odds, while a young couple may see an increase in their divorce odds if one person recently got a job that increases their commute.

Long commutes can create a lot of stress in a marriage

The problem is that this long commute can lead to a lot of stress and conflict in the marriage, and the couple can begin drifting apart.

For example, they do not get to spend as much time together, so they may start growing apart and losing the connection they once had. Additionally, the spouse who spends a significant amount of time on the road every day may miss important family events or children’s activities, which can lead to conflict between the partners.

That is also why couples who have been doing this for a long time do not necessarily have higher divorce odds. It clearly works for them, or they have already addressed some of these complications and hurdles and managed to overcome them. But for new couples, this change can be too much for their marriage to overcome, and they end up breaking up.

Divorce can be complicated, both for those in short-term and long-term relationships. If you and your spouse are headed in that direction, it is imperative that you understand all of your legal options.
