3 tips for communicating about your children

On Behalf of | Apr 25, 2025 | Family Law |

One of the most pressing thoughts when you decide to split from your ex is that you won’t have to speak to them any longer. If you share children with them, you aren’t going to be able to avoid speaking to your ex.

Proper communication is critical in child custody situations. Georgia courts typically award joint legal custody of the children, which means that both parents will have a say in deciding how they’re raised. These tips may help you as you speak to your ex about matters related to the children.

1. Stick to the matters related to the children

Speaking about matters not related to the children may lead to disagreements, particularly if the subject is related to the facts that ended the relationship. Be sure you focus solely on the things that you have to decide about the children.

2. Use a businesslike tone

Using a businesslike tone can help to keep emotion out of the discussion. Keeping your tone calm and even can help you to get your point across to your ex, but remember that active listening is a big part of having a businesslike conversation. This means that you should take the time to hear what your ex has to say and think carefully about how it may impact the children.

3. Know when to take a break

Every conversation has the possibility of turning contentious. If tensions start to rise, take the time to calm down before coming back to the discussion. This time can help you both to clear your mind and consider the possible options for resolution.

Having a parenting plan that comprehensively reflects the children’s best interests may help to reduce the chance of disagreements. The terms you have in the plan may include using written messages instead of verbal messages, which provides a trail of the conversation. Working with someone familiar with these matters may be beneficial if you’re in this position.
