What should you know about ignition interlocks?

On Behalf of | Dec 19, 2024 | DUI |

Some people who are convicted of a drunk driving charge in Georgia may have to use an ignition interlock device as part of their sentence. For some, this is a way to get their driver’s license back faster than what’s possible without the device.

Anyone who’s facing the possibility of having to use an ignition interlock device should ensure they understand a few basic points about them.

How does an ignition interlock work?

An ignition interlock device measures the amount of alcohol in a driver’s breath. The ignition will only start if the driver’s breath sample result is less than the limit programmed into the machine. In most cases, the allowable limit for alcohol is much less than the legal blood-alcohol concentration limit of .08%.

Drivers may also have to provide a breath sample while they’re driving. An alert will go off on the device. The driver has a predetermined amount of time to find somewhere safe to pull over and provide the required sample. This is done to ensure the drivers remain sober while they’re operating the vehicle.

The testing results from the device are sent to the company that installs, monitors and calibrates the machine. In some cases, they’re sent in real-time, but some companies use a downloading system that involves getting the information from the device at calibration appointments. Once the results are gathered, they’re sent to the agency supervising the driver.

Facing a drunk driving charge is challenging, partly because of how much the various sentences can impact your life. Working with someone who can assist with learning the options available may help defendants as they develop their defense strategy.
