When marital communication goes wrong

On Behalf of | Aug 26, 2024 | Divorce |

Marriage isn’t always plain sailing. Virtually every couple experiences difficulties at some point. Nonetheless, some couples can overcome difficulties together, and some are not.

Throughout any relationship, there is one factor that has to remain constant- communication. Without effective communication, disagreements tend to worsen. Outlined below are some factors that have the potential to spoil communication between married couples

Electronic devices

The majority of us rely on electronic devices like cell phones. Cell phones can now do much more than make calls. Users can browse social media and websites. They can even watch movies. However, this can come at a cost. Even when physically in the same room, spouses can become disconnected emotionally when engaging in too much screen time. Hours can go by each day without partners really talking, sharing their thoughts and listening to each other. Over a long time, this can put a strain on the marriage.

When feelings can’t be shared

It can be very difficult to share personal feelings. Nonetheless, this is something that partners should be able to do. A lot of this comes down to how a partner reacts to honest discussions, even when they are perhaps hearing something that they do not like. An angry reaction can make it difficult for a partner with something on their mind to share it. Over time, this can result in serious communication deficiencies.

What can help with communication?

Many couples find it helpful to engage in active listening sessions. These are more structured conversations where one spouse talks and the other listens. Partners can take turns to do this. Sometimes, having more structured conversations can help to eliminate arguments.

If you feel like the communication with your partner has permanently broken down, then divorce may be a possibility. There is no harm in exploring your legal options.
