Why your marriage could impact your divorce rate

On Behalf of | Feb 5, 2023 | Family Law |

There are many different things that can impact the odds that someone will get divorced. Looking at the divorce rate overall doesn’t tell you how these unique factors impact individuals. Everyone is not facing the same general risk of their marriage ending in divorce, although it is certainly true that a divorce could happen to anyone.

One example of a factor that can impact your divorce odds is the age that you were when you got married. Generally speaking, studies have found that those who get married early or late in life have higher divorce odds. They have found that the lowest odds of divorce happen when a couple gets married at 32 years old. Prior to that, the odds drop every year. After that, they start going back up every year.

Reasons age may matter

One reason that age matters is simply that couples getting married early still have a lot of development ahead of them. Physical brain development isn’t even done until you are around 25 years of age. So couples who get married at a younger age may find themselves changing and becoming incompatible.

Another thing to consider is that financial stress often leads to divorce. It can be hard for a young couple to make ends meet and to provide for themselves, which could end the relationship.

Moreover, it has been found that those with a higher level of education tend to stay married for longer. As such, someone who puts off marriage to get a college education may eventually have a more stable relationship than someone who gets married right after high school.

If you and your spouse do decide to get a divorce this year, be sure you know exactly what legal steps to take so that you can move through this transition in the best way possible.
