You don’t have to drive a car, truck or even a motorcycle to be arrested for DUI. One Bolingbroke man learned that lesson the hard way. He was arrested on April 25 when he drove his lawnmower to a local gas station to buy beer.
According to the Monroe County sheriff, the man was arrested at a gas station located off GA Highway 19 South. Apparently, someone saw him driving the lawnmower down the highway and called the sheriff’s office because they believed he was intoxicated. The sheriff says that sometimes situations aren’t what witnesses describe. However, in this case, “the caller was exactly right — there was an intoxicated man on a lawnmower driving down the road.”
He was arrested after a deputy administered multiple sobriety tests and charged with DUI as well as driving on a suspended license. The sheriff says that “under Georgia law, you cannot be driving any motor vehicle on a highway under the influence of alcohol” and that according to the law, “a lawnmower is a vehicle.” It’s unclear whether the man knew that or not.
Fortunately, no one was harmed during this man’s beer run. Of course, he could have been seriously injured or caused a crash while on the highway.
Repeat DUI convictions can result in serious penalties here in Georgia, including jail time. If you’re driving on a suspended license, that’s just going to make the situation worse.
