Georgia man detained after alleged drugged driving rampage

| Jul 8, 2014 | DUI |

Authorities have detained a Georgia man in the wake of an alleged episode of enraged drugged driving during which the man drove across two counties and intentionally struck 10 vehicles. The reported crashes began on the evening of July 1 in Nicholson after the 53-year-old man’s truck hit a light pole near the city’s community center and then ran into a parked car in the parking lot. The man then drove into a cemetery and onto U.S. Highway 441, heading south towards Athens. After he gained the highway, he allegedly began intentionally rear-ending vehicles, including a tractor trailer and a passenger car, as he made his way towards Athens. He also reportedly side-swiped some cars as he drifted into their lanes.

The collision spree continued after the man crossed into Athens-Clarke County, according to Athens-Clarke County Police. The man reportedly rear-ended a Hummer multiple times, possibly stripping the vehicle’s gears. He then allegedly drove around the Hummer and began to run into other vehicles.

Police reportedly discovered the man’s heavily-damaged truck stopped near Boulevard and Pound Street; a state trooper stated that the truck had likely stopped running due to the massive damage it sustained. The man had apparently abandoned his vehicle to seek treatment at the Athens Regional Medical Center. He has been charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving and various other violations.

A defense attorney in a case like this one would likely seek a plea agreement with the district attorney in the interest of allowing his or client to received a lessened sentence that included treatment for the defendant’s mental health concerns and drug use. A plea bargain might allow for the defendant to face diminished charges or penalties.
