Motorist arrested, charged with DUI after car chase in Athens

| Feb 13, 2013 | License Suspension |

Last week, Athens-Clarke police attempted to conduct a normal traffic stop after receiving several calls from witnesses who claimed that they had seen a motorist operating his vehicle in a reckless and dangerous manner.

When police first attempted to pull the driver over, the driver ignored police and continued driving. According to police, the driver did not stop his vehicle until police used spikes on the road to puncture and flatten the driver’s tires on his car. Police arrested the motorist and charged him with several offenses including DUI.

While the motorist led Athens-Clarke police on the chase, police reported that the driver was weaving on the road and that he also failed to stop at a red light. Police said that they activated lights and sirens on a patrol car when attempting to conduct the traffic stop, but the driver still allegedly failed to pull over on the road.

Police said that they were finally able to stop the motorist after putting spikes on the road to disable his vehicle.

The 49-year-old man was charged with several serious offenses including driving with a suspended license and fleeing to elude. After questioning the motorist, police also suspected that the man was driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The man allegedly told police that he only had one glass of wine prior to driving. However, the man said that he had also taken his medication, which may have affected his ability to operate a vehicle. Police said that a blood test was administered after the motorist was arrested.

If the man’s license was suspended as a result of a previous DUI arrest, the man could face additional penalties for a repeat DUI offense, including jail time and drug and alcohol dependency evaluations and mandatory treatment.
