Man arrested more than 20 times for DUI in Georgia, other states

| Mar 21, 2012 | DUI |

The embarrassment of being arrested in Georgia for public drunkenness or underage drinking may only be temporary. But the embarrassment and shame one may feel after being accused of drunk driving may last longer than anyone might imagine.

Although some individuals are wrongfully charged with drunk driving and are able to have the charges dismissed, they may be forced to live with the stigma of a DUI arrest for the rest of their lives. There is no doubt that drunk driving is dangerous and can cause undue harm to others. But when some individuals clearly violate the law without caring about how their actions may affect others, society sometimes makes the assumption that all drivers accused of DUI are guilty and should be punished.

Recently, a man was sentenced to serve an additional seven years in prison for drunk driving after he violated the conditions of his suspended sentence for other DUI convictions. Over his lifetime, the 39-year-old man has racked up more than two dozen DUI arrests in Georgia, Alabama and Virginia.

After numerous arrests, the man was sentenced in July 2006 to serve 20 years in prison with 15 years suspended. The man was released in August 2010, but he violated his suspended sentence after being arrested three more times for DUI within a one-month period in 2011. This month, he was sentenced to serve seven more years in prison.

Drunk driving should never be condoned, and some individuals may be required to serve lengthy prison sentences if they clearly demonstrate that they cannot abide by the law. But not all individuals accused of DUI are guilty of the charges. In Georgia, individuals accused of DUI might consider working with a defense attorney in order to make sure that their rights are properly protected and that one’s case is not judged in a similar manner as other DUI cases.
