Former UGA football player arrested for drunk driving

| Mar 12, 2012 | DUI |

Another football player may have jeopardized the beginning of his career with the National Football League after he was suspected of drunk driving and arrested last week by Athens-Clarke County police officers.

The man is a former University of Georgia student. He left UGA after last year to enter the NFL draft with many expecting the former tight end to make it to the second round. In addition to considering whether to defend the charges filed against him last week, the football player may now need to work extra hard to defend his talent on the field in order to prevent the drunk driving charges from affecting his football career.

According to a spokeswoman for the Athens-Clarke County police, the former UGA player was arrested on March 9 around 3 a.m. after a traffic stop in Athens. The former UGA tight end was driving the vehicle that had been stopped and there was a passenger in his vehicle. The Washington Post did not report why the stop was conducted or why the man was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, but during the stop, the football player was asked to take a field sobriety test.

The Athens-Clarke County police officer reported that the driver did not pass parts of the field sobriety test. Police reported that the man’s blood alcohol level was over the legal limit. Georgia’s legal limit is 0.08. The former UGA player’s blood alcohol level was 0.095.

A major consequence of being charged with DUI is the possibility of having a conviction on one’s record. But as we have noted from other DUI arrests that have been reported on this blog, these charges can also have a negative impact on one’s educational opportunities and professional career, especially when an individual is just beginning his or her career.
