Summer is winding to a close as Labor Day weekend approaches. Students are returning to college and may be attending final summer celebrations in the last couple of weeks before classes truly get underway. In these last two weeks, law enforcement across the country and Georgia will be combining efforts to crack down on people who may be driving under the influence of alcohol.
The 2011 Impaired Driving National Enforcement Crackdown begins on Friday, August 19 and goes through Labor Day weekend, ending September 5, 2011. Police will be involved in high-visibility efforts, including sobriety checkpoints, to stop people they suspect of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs and arresting people for DUI.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) website for the national DUI crackdown contains materials that outline the kinds of efforts law enforcement officers will undertake in the next couple of weeks.
The national message of the crackdown is “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.” Police want people to know that extra law enforcement will be on the roads especially with the goal of pulling over and arresting motorists and motorcyclists who are driving under the influence of alcohol. The NHTSA website for the crackdown includes promotional materials warning drivers that if they drink and drive they will get pulled over.
The NHTSA 2011 Impaired Driving National Enforcement Crackdown website also includes facts and statistics on arrests from years past. According to the NHTSA, FBI statistics record that there were 1.5 million arrests for DUI in 2009 across the country.
Have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day Weekend!
