Police officer fired after he is arrested for DUI

| Jun 28, 2011 | DUI |

This blog has discussed in previous posts how DUI charges can lead to the loss of a job. A DUI charge can be damaging to anyone’s career because court dates and a driver’s license suspension can make it difficult to get to work, not to mention how word of the charge may affect one’s reputation at work. In certain careers, a DUI charge can be especially damaging, such as medicine, teaching or public service. For example, former University of Georgia Athletic Director Damon Evans was forced to resign following a DUI arrest. He was expected to be a role model for student athletes and had to leave when he set a bad example.

A DUI charge can also be damaging to people who serve the public by upholding public safety and enforcing laws, such as police officers. Recently, a Duluth Police Department corporal was fired from his job after being arrested for DUI. The corporal had been with the department for 13 years. He had received reprimands over the years, but also commendations. A few days after his arrest, he received a letter from the deputy chief of the department saying that the recent severe misconduct combined with previous reprimands throughout the years had led to his termination.

According to the Gwinnett Daily Post, the officer was driving his personal vehicle when he swerved into the wrong lane, hit some trees and crashed into a utility pole. He was uninjured, but officers said that they noticed he had a plastic cup of beer in his cup holder, glassy eyes and slurred speech. He refused to take a breathalyzer and did not take field sobriety tests, but was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
