Georgia State Patrol looking for drunk drivers over holiday weekend

| Jun 29, 2011 | DUI |

The Georgia State Patrol will be out in full force on Georgia’s highways over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. The troopers will be looking for drivers who are driving aggressively, driving under the influence, speeding or are not wearing seatbelts. The stepped-up patrol will occur over the 78-hour period from 6 p.m. on Friday until midnight on July 4.

Troopers will be on concentrated patrols on Georgia’s roads and conducting DUI checkpoints. Georgia’s Operation Zero Tolerance is still ongoing and will have troopers out looking for people who are driving under the influence.

The Georgia State Patrol is increasing the number of troopers on the road because holiday weekends result in more traffic on the roads, which can result in more traffic accidents. According to a press release from the Georgia Department of Public Safety, last year, the Georgia State Patrol investigated 300 traffic crashes over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. The Georgia Department of Transportation’s Crash Reporting Unit lists 11 traffic deaths during the Fourth of July weekend last year from 1,829 crashes. There were also 834 people injured in those accidents.

Georgia police will also be making sure that children are properly restrained. On Friday, July 1, the new change in Georgia’s Booster Seat Law that says children under the age of 8 need to be in a proper safety or booster seat goes into effect.

Make sure that you and your kids are properly restrained in your vehicle and have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July holiday weekend in Georgia.
