Happy St. Patrick’s Day — have a safe one!

| Mar 11, 2011 | DUI |

St. Patrick’s Day is next Thursday, and in anticipation of the holiday, the director of the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Harris Blackwood, penned a column in the Coastal Courier reminding people to play it safe and to not rely on ‘luck’ to get them home. Blackwood reminds readers that Georgia law enforcement is working under Operation Zero Tolerance and anyone who is arrested for DUI will go to jail. There will likely be extra law enforcement on the roads looking for impaired drivers.

According to Blackwood, 103 Americans were killed in fatal car crashes on St. Patrick’s Day in 2009. Blackwood writes that about half of those fatal crashes involved an alcohol-impaired driver with a blood-alcohol level at 0.08 or higher. In Georgia, a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 is the legal limit.

Blackwood offers tips for avoiding driving while under the influence of alcohol. He recommends designating a sober driver and programming cab company numbers into your phone before going to any parties or bars, to better ensure you have a safe ride home before beginning to drink.

If you will be hosting a party, Blackwood reminds people to make sure that guests have safe rides home and to take anyone’s keys who is thinking about driving while impaired. It is also recommended to serve non-alcoholic beverages and food along with any alcoholic beverages you plan on serving.
