Georgia State Patrol Set to Continue DUI Task Force, ALS Program

On Behalf of | Dec 18, 2010 | License Suspension |

The Georgia State Patrol has announced that it will continue the Nighthawks DUI Task Force and the Administrative License Suspension (ALS) Program. The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety awarded a traffic safety H.E.A.T. grant to the Georgia State Patrol for nearly $1.8 million that will keep the program going.

Both of the programs were started in 2004. The Nighthawks DUI Task Force is made up of Georgia State Troopers who have specialized training in impaired driving detection and DUI arrests. The DUI Task Force patrols occur in Fulton County as well as Cobb, Clayton, DeKalb and Gwinnett counties. The Nighthawks recently expanded their Atlanta patrols.

The Georgia State Patrol will also continue their ALS Program, which consists of giving support to law enforcement officers who testify at Administration License Suspension hearings. People who are charged with driving under the influence face having their license suspended. If the driver challenges the suspension, they will go to court for an Administrative License Suspension hearing. The ALS program provides an attorney if needed to the DUI task force officer who is testifying against the motorist.

As noted in the previous post, this weekend is National Holiday Lifesaver Weekend and DUI Task Forces and regular law enforcement will be ramping up their efforts to catch impaired drivers through checkpoints and increased patrols.
