George Michael Says Thousands of Letters Sent in Support Since DUI

On Behalf of | Oct 8, 2010 | DUI |

George Michael is currently serving a month in jail after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of drugs in August. The DUI charges stemmed from a July car accident when the singer crashed into a storefront in London while high on marijuana. Officers found marijuana cigarettes in his car and charged him with DUI.

As we reported in the previous post, the singer of “Faith” and “Careless Whisper” says he is getting along fine in jail. He recently told the media that he has spent most of his time in jail reading “thousands of letters and postcards of incredible support from people around the world.” He also said that he hopes to repay their kindness by making and releasing more music when he gets out of jail.

George Michael rose to fame in the band Wham! in the 80s. He followed his time in Wham! with a successful Grammy-award-winning solo career.

This was not his first trouble with drugs and the law. Michael was banned from driving for two years and sentenced to 100 hours of community service in 2007 after being arrested for DUI and admitting to driving under the influence of drugs. In 2008, Michael was arrested for drug possession. Michael promised fans then to “sort himself out.” He told the judge at his sentencing hearing that he had checked into rehab and was serious about beating his addictions.

Michael, 47, will spend a total of four weeks in jail and will follow that time with four weeks on probation. He was also fined and banned from driving for five years.
