Congressional candidate open about his past Georgia DUI arrest

| Jul 6, 2018 | DUI |

If you’re facing DUI charges, it may feel like your life will never be the same. However, plenty of people who have been arrested for DUI achieve or continue their success in life and work. One such person is Brandon Brown.

Brown is the Democratic candidate for Congress in the 4th Congressional District of South Carolina. The 42-year-old isn’t new to politics. In fact, he ran for that same seat back in 2004. He was the first African-American to do so. He didn’t win, but went on to work for then-Sen. Joe Biden in his 2008 presidential bid.

In June 2014, Brown was charged with DUI in Georgia, where he was a vice president at his alma mater, Paine College in Augusta. He pleaded guilty to failure to maintain his lane and reckless driving.

Brown has been open about his arrest and wrote about it in a South Carolina newspaper. He said that “understanding my rights, I allowed the legal process to work….I could argue with the officer about my innocence, list my credentials….Or, I could live another day by complying with the officer’s wishes….”

Brown lost his job at Paine a few months after the arrest. He settled a wrongful termination suit with the college earlier this year.

There’s a significant difference between a DUI arrest and conviction. In some cases, as in this one, it may be possible to plead the DUI charge down to something else, such as reckless driving. In other cases, it’s possible to challenge some or all of the evidence and get the charges dropped completely.

That’s why it’s essential to seek legal guidance if you are charged with DUI and find out what your options are. It can make a big difference to your future.
