Is the Athens DUI/Drug Court the best solution for you?

On Behalf of | Mar 1, 2017 | DUI |

For many people who find themselves charged with a DUI or drug-related crime, jail time is not the best option, either for them or for the community. That’s where the Athens DUI/Drug Court comes in.

Started back in 2001 in the State Court of Clark County, this court is designed to prevent repeat offenses, increase community safety and get participants the help they need to improve the quality of their lives. Since its inception, it has received funding from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to increase the number of people it can serve.

The court is a team effort that includes judges, law enforcement professionals, the Public Defender’s Office, probation officials and experts in substance abuse treatment. All of these team members work to help those charged with DUI and drug charges battle their substance abuse issues during a program that lasts for at least 14 months.

That program includes:

— Extended assessment– Treatment and recovery– Relapse prevention– Recovery management

The program also includes educational and vocational assistance to help people get the schooling and training that they need to find productive work and stay out of trouble.

If you are facing a DUI or drug charge, your attorney can work to try to get you into this program in lieu of a jail sentence. He or she can determine what you need to show the court in order to convince a judge that you are a good candidate for Athens DUI/Drug Court. Even a first-time DUI can derail your college future and career plans. That’s why you need to take these charges seriously.
