Georgia steps up against drunk driving during the holiday

| Jul 3, 2015 | DUI First Offense |

The 4th of July holiday weekend is famous for being a dangerous time to drive, a weekend when there are many drunk driving accidents. In Georgia, the police department is stepping up to fight back against drunk driving even more than usual, hoping to keep the death and accident toll as low as can be.

The campaign that they are running is called Operation Zero Tolerance. On a national level, the government is already running another campaign that is called Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. With the two running at once, the police hope they can have a more drastic impact than in recent years.

Over roughly the last decade, more than 40 percent of those killed in accidents on the 4th were in some way connected to drunk driving — either they were driving drunk, riding with a drunk driver, or hit by a drunk driver. On the whole, 2013 alone saw more than 5,000 accidents in Georgia. Around 1,800 injuries were reported and 20 people lost their lives.

Part of this campaign is also designed to improve the flow of traffic. Though the summer is usually a big time for road construction, the state has decided to do away with all of the lane closures that are related to these construction projects for this weekend, hoping that will keep traffic jams from forming and reduce accidents.

If you’ve been pulled over and given a DUI as part of this new campaign, you must know exactly what legal options you have and what steps to take. Remember, an arrest is not automatically the same as a conviction, and you have rights even if you are convicted.
