Ex-NBA player to serve 16 days for DUI

| Mar 8, 2014 | DUI |

An ex-NBA player was recently sentenced to serve a 16-day jail term after he pleaded guilty to drunk driving charges in Georgia. Mookie Blaylock was charged with DUI in Spalding County. The 46-year-old man was involved in a hit-and-run accident last March.

After pleading guilty to the charges of both DUI and hit-and-run, he was sentenced to serve a 30-day jail term. However, the judge is his case credited him for 14 days, which he had already served. Another component of his sentencing involves a requirement that he attend a rehabilitation program following his 16-day prison term.

In March 2013, the basketball star was found in a supermarket parking lot, allegedly staggering, after being involved in a hit-and-crash. Approximately two months later, he is alleged to have caused a head-on collision, which resulted in the death of a mother of five. There was no evidence that he was intoxicated at the time of the second incident. However, he did face multiple charges in that crash, including a charge of driving while his license was suspended.

The 30-day jail sentence of Mookie Blaylock highlights the importance of remaining at the scene of an accident. When a DUI charge is combined with a hit-and-run charge, the consequences can often be even more severe than a month-long jail term. Indeed, it is likely that this Georgia resident achieved favorable results in during his criminal proceedings. He may have also reached a plea bargain for reduced sentencing in exchange for his guilty plea and for his scheduled attendance of a rehab program following his 16 days in jail.
