Driver to serve 15 years in prison for fatal DUI crash in Georgia

On Behalf of | Mar 18, 2013 | DUI |

When a drunk driver causes an accident in Athens resulting in serious injuries or death, the driver may be forced to face consequences that he or she never imagined facing.

For example, a 22-year-old man was sentenced today to serve 15 years in prison for driving drunk and causing an accident in Douglas County that resulted in the deaths of two people last year. The young man was convicted of two counts of vehicular homicide. The man’s attorney requested that the defendant be convicted as a first-time offender; however, because the crash was deadly, the defendant was not granted first offender status.

After the crash was investigated, officials determined that the defendant had been speeding when the accident occurred. Breath tests were also administered after the crash, revealing that the defendant’s blood alcohol content was nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08.

Felony drunk driving cases and other serious DUI charges will result in legal consequences when folks are convicted of DUI. Drunk driving is a dangerous mistake, and when folks are guilty of committing such a mistake, the consequences may be severe. In addition to a lengthy prison sentence, an alleged DUI driver may also be forced to live with the fact that he or she took someone else’s life.

Facing these consequences may be terrifying, but folks should understand that they do not need to face these charges alone. They may choose to work with an attorney who will not only protect their rights, but also listen to their side of the story when few others will.
