Congressman’s son arrested in Athens for driving under the influence

| Jan 14, 2013 | Underage DUI |

According to reports, Athens-Clarke County Police reported that they had arrested U.S. Rep. John Barrow’s son over the weekend for allegedly committing several criminal offenses.

Although the teen may be in some hot water with his parents for a few days or weeks, the teen could have to live with several offenses on his record that could affect his future academic and career opportunities if he doesn’t make sure that his criminal case is handled by a strategic and aggressive defense attorney.

Athens-Clarke County Police said that the 18-year-old has been charged with three misdemeanors. One of the misdemeanor charges was for allegedly speeding. Police also accused the teen of driving under the influence of drugs and possessing less than one ounce of marijuana at the time of his arrest.

The congressman’s son was apparently pulled over for speeding early Saturday morning. Reports have not stated what caused police to suspect the teen of driving under the influence of drugs, but he was arrested after the traffic stop for driving under the influence and for allegedly possessing a small amount of marijuana.

No comments have been issued by the congressman’s office regarding his son’s arrest. Like any other family that has been affected by criminal charges for underage drunk driving or driving under the influence of drugs in Georgia, the teen’s family will most likely want to handle the matter as privately as possible.

DUI charges and other criminal charges may certainly result in serious legal consequences, but the social consequences can be very damaging as well, especially when cases are highly publicized. By choosing to consult an attorney after a DUI arrest or arrest for drug possession, some defendants may be able to reach more favorable outcomes in their cases, especially when future academic and career opportunities are at stake.
