Four Loko Maker Says Will Remove Caffeine From Its Beverages

| Nov 19, 2010 | Underage DUI |

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, on Tuesday, the manufacturer of Four Loko said that they are pulling their caffeinated alcohol beverages from shelves. The company, Phusion Products, will remove caffeine and two other ingredients from the recipe of their products. The company pulled the products from shelves as several colleges and states have banned the drink and the FDA is considering a ban of alcohol products containing caffeine.

Critics of the beverage have said that the combination of caffeine and alcohol is dangerous. Each 23.5 ounce can of Four Loko contains 12 percent alcohol and is the equivalent of four beers at the price of $2.50. Public safety advocates say that the caffeine can make a person feel more alert and lead someone to think they can drive while intoxicated. The drink is popular with college students or inexperienced drinkers, which can lead to underage DUIs and health and safety issues.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a study was done by Wake Forest University that showed that students who drink alcohol and caffeine combined are more likely to experience alcohol-related injuries. There have been several incidents where college students were hospitalized after drinking the beverage at parties. The beverages have been banned in Washington, Michigan and Utah. Other states may follow.
