Bus Driver Pleads Guilty to DUI Charges

| Jun 16, 2010 | DUI |

A former school bus driver who recently pleaded guilty to DUI charges in Vermont had a long criminal history, including robbery, disorderly conduct, underage possession of alcohol, and DUI convictions in North Carolina and Georgia. Shane K. McBrayer, 30, drove a school bus of high school hockey players on a nearly 2-hour trip in January while he had a blood-alcohol content of .134.  McBrayer was driving erratically and came under the suspicion of the team’s officials.

The plea deal has McBrayer pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and negligent operation of a motor vehicle in exchange for having a more serious felony DUI charge and reckless endangerment charges dropped. McBrayer will serve up to 18 months in jail. After 30 days in jail, he will be eligible for transfer to Georgia, where he is on probation for purse snatching.

When McBrayer applied for his commercial driver’s license in Vermont, he neglected to mention he had previous drunk-driving convictions. A spokesperson with the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles said that disclosing the information would not necessarily have disqualified him from receiving a license, since he had a license in another state that wasn’t currently suspended. The Department of Motor Vehicles would, however, pass on that information to potential employers.
