What do you know about college drinking?

On Behalf of | Jul 7, 2016 | Underage Drinking |

If you are a student at a university, chances are quite good that you have had at least some experience with alcohol. Even if you don’t drink, it’s likely that you have seen roommates or dorm neighbors under the influence or dealing with hangover effects.

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, approximately 80 percent of students enrolled in college consume alcohol. Of that total, roughly half binge drink.

Many people are surprised to learn that college students have a higher rate of binge-drinking and more incidences of driving while under the influence of alcohol than those in their age group who do not attend college. But when you consider all the free time college students have, coupled with often lax enforcement of drinking laws, it’s easier to understand. Factor in the stresses of academic studies and the lure of a culture that promotes alcohol-drenched fraternity and sorority activities, and you have the perfect storm for a DWI.

Some possible consequences of underage drinking include:

— Getting assaulted by another student, as over 690,000 university students age 18 to 24 suffer assaults by students who have consumed alcohol.

— Dying in an alcohol-related incident; annually, 1,825 university students age 18 to 24 die this way.

— Being sexually abused like the 97,000 students who are victimized by date rapes and sexual assaults related to alcohol usage.

— Experiencing academic problems, as nearly a quarter of college students report negative academic consequences from drinking, such as getting bad grades and missing classes.

Underage drinking and driving can get you into a world of legal woes as well, which is why it is so important to retain competent legal representation after a DWI or underage drinking arrest.
