Teens detained after fatal Georgia car accident

Two teenagers have been held in connection with a car accident that killed a third teenager on May 31. According to authorities, an underage DUI charge has been filed against a 17-year-old boy who crashed while driving his Dodge Ram at approximately 1:18 a.m. on the morning of the incident. He also faces a charge of first degree homicide with a vehicle. An 18-year-old man has also been detained on charges of possession of marijuana and underage possession or consumption of alcohol. He also faces a charge of maintaining a disorderly house.

At the time of the accident in Cumming, the 17-year-old driver was reportedly drunk at the wheel, losing control of the vehicle and crashing into a telephone pole. A teenager was ejected from the vehicle, resulting in his death. Three additional teens suffered injuries and were taken to area hospitals for treatment. According to reports, a party involving more than 60 participants occurred at the home of the 18-year-old prior to the individuals involved leaving together in the truck. The man's parents were reportedly away on vacation at the time.

Authorities note that all individuals who were in the vehicle were to be tested for alcohol consumption. The driver of the truck reportedly has a prior arrest record. As the teenager appeared before a judge via teleconference, his lawyer appeared with him. Bond in the case has been set at $20,000.

A minor facing charges involving underage DUI and other serious charges in connection with an accident involving drugs or alcohol may find that the assistance of a lawyer is important as charges are answered. A lawyer may endeavor to negotiate a plea deal in an effort to obtain lesser charges and penalties on behalf of an underage client in such a scenario.
