Man faces DUI and other charges following accident in Georgia

| Jan 5, 2014 | DUI |

Individuals who are accused of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs may be seen as guilty troublemakers by residents of the community. Still, this is not the viewpoint taken by the justice system in Georgia, where these individuals are innocent until proved guilty. One Georgia man is facing this scenario after being arrested and charged with a DUI and other violations.

The situation occurred when a two-vehicle wreck happened. A 21-year-old man was driving a Jeep Liberty and ended up running into the back of another vehicle. The Jeep then collided with a light post, knocking out power in the vicinity, according to police.

The accident ended up being a hit-and-run crash, authorities said. Police caught the man at a gas station. His charges include DUI of drugs, possession of a drug object and marijuana, failure to maintain one’s lane, leaving the scene of an accident causing damage or injury, and suspended license.

Georgia prosecutors are responsible for proving DUI charges beyond a reasonable doubt. This must take place before a criminal conviction can be secured in court. A DUI is a serious offense because a conviction may negatively impact a person’s future dealings with insurance companies or potential employers, among other problems. Moreover, a DUI conviction may lead to penalties such as a fine and the loss of a license for a period of time. A careful review of the evidence that prosecutors intend to provide in an effort to support the accusations in court could be a major area on which the criminal defense decides to focus in such a case.
