Young man arrested, charged with DUI in fatal Georgia accident

| Oct 31, 2013 | DUI |

DUI charges can interrupt the course of our lives, particularly if one is charged with drunk driving after being involved in a fatal accident. Recently, a 22-year-old man has been charged with DUI after he was in a car accident that killed a University of Georgia student. The young man also faces the charge of vehicular homicide and other violations.

The 20-year-old university student who lost his life in the accident was a passenger in the man’s car when the accident occurred. Allegedly, the car went out of control, careened off the road, and drove into a tree. The incident happened at approximately 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20.

Neither of the men were using seat belts at the time of the crash. The 20-year-old suffered catastrophic injuries as a result of the crash and unfortunately doctors were unable to save him. Funeral services were held for the accident victim on Wednesday, Oct. 23.

When Georgia DUI charges involve the death of the passenger who was riding with the accused, the consequences of being convicted could well mean jail time. It is fortunate that the 22-year-old man survived this accident and did not meet the same fate as his passenger; however, he will now face the challenge of defending himself in court for a variety of serious criminal charges. By employing a well-thought-out and strategic legal defense, the accused man may be able to get the more serious charges dropped, such as DUI and vehicular homicide. He may also be able to reach a plea agreement, if circumstances warrant such a negotiation, to minimize any potential punishments.
