Man arrested after posting drunk driving video

On Behalf of | Apr 19, 2013 | DUI |

Most drivers in Georgia have heard about the dangers of driving while using a cellphone or other handheld device. Even more have heard of the dangers of drinking and driving. A recent DUI arrest is highlighting the risk of doing both at the same time – but maybe not in the way readers might think. A man in Hawaii was charged with drunk driving last month after he took a video of himself drinking what appeared to be alcohol while operating a vehicle. He then posted the video online. A number of viewers saw the video, and then passed it on to law enforcement officials.

In the video, the man reportedly said things like “I am so happy to be drinking and driving.” He also apparently admitted that he knew drinking and driving was illegal.

In another video the man posted online, he said that the substance he was drinking did not contain alcohol and was actually cream soda. Presumably law enforcement will investigate these claims to decide whether to move forward with charges.

While the video was perhaps meant as a joke, it is important to remember that law enforcement officers in Georgia do not see drinking and driving as a laughing matter. Police officers all throughout the state are on high alert for individuals suspected to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Individuals who are charged with driving under the influence can face serious penalties including fines, jail time and suspension of driving privileges. They may also be required to install ignition interlock devices in their vehicles.
