UGA student pulled over for speeding, arrested for drunk driving

In Georgia, an individual who is initially pulled over by police for failing to turn on his or her vehicle's lights or for speeding could quickly be suspected of drunk driving if police happen to see that a driver's eyes are bloodshot or when police happen to notice that a driver is having a little trouble finding his or her driver's license in one's wallet.

Over the weekend, a University of Georgia student was arrested for DUI after police said that he was driving 16 miles per hour over the speed limit. The 21-year-old student was initially pulled over for speeding, but an officer noticed that the student's eyes were bloodshot and glassy at 2:18 a.m. An officer also noticed that the driver was wearing a wristband from a local club.

After suspecting the student of DUI, the officer asked the student to take a breath test. The driver allegedly blew a 0.139. The student was arrested and two more state breath tests were administered when the student was in police custody. The student was charged with DUI.

When an individual is arrested for driving drunk in Georgia, he or she could face serious consequences in addition to a conviction. This is why many folks choose to work with an attorney who understands the state's laws and how to protect those who are facing criminal charges.

One consequence folks may face for DUI is temporarily losing their driving privileges. For example, those who take a breath test and blow a 0.08 or higher face a six-month license suspension. Those who refuse to take a breath test could face a 12-month driver's license suspension after a DUI arrest.

In some cases, a DUI defense attorney may be able to help folks get some of their driving privileges back after a DUI arrest. An attorney may even be able to help some defendants avoid a conviction entirely based on the circumstances of an arrest.
