Former UGA football star Hines Ward arrested on suspicion of DUI

Former UGA football star, Hines Ward, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol last weekend in Georgia. The 35-year-old NFL receiver was pulled over by a law enforcement officer in DeKalb County.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the officer suspected Ward of driving while intoxicated because he said the car was making un-signaled lane changes and also struck a curb. Upon stopping Ward, he said that he observed the athlete's eyes to be red and face flushed, and his breath smelling of alcohol.

According to the AJC, the DeKalb County police officer said that he asked Ward to recite the alphabet from D to X, but Hines did not perform the task correctly, mixing up letters and forgetting letters. He also could not allegedly keep his balance during field sobriety tests.

The football star admitted to having had two drinks, but denied he was intoxicated. He said that his last drink was around midnight, and he was pulled over around 2 a.m. He took an alcohol sensor test, but refused to provide a blood-alcohol breath test. The sensor test is different from the BAC test. Ward was taken to the DeKalb County jail under arrest. He posted $1,000 bond and was released. His passenger, a former teammate, was allowed to drive Ward's car home.

Ward denies that he was driving while intoxicated. His agent has said that the facts will prove that he is not guilty of DUI. Ward apologized to his fans and the Steelers for the DUI arrest, however.
