R&B performer, Nivea, charged with DUI in Atlanta

| Jun 26, 2011 | DUI |

The popular R&B singer, Nivea, was arrested under suspicion of DUI in northwest Atlanta, Georgia, recently after she crashed into a downed tree with her car. The tree had fallen on the road after a storm, but was marked with yellow caution tape and traffic cones warning oncoming drivers.

According to Access Atlanta, police allege the singer had bloodshot eyes and had alcohol on her breath when they arrived at the scene of the one-car accident. The woman was taken to an area hospital, complaining of injuries to her head and neck. An unnamed child who was a passenger in the car was not hurt. Nivea has two children, one with rapper Lil Wayne.

After posting bond, the entertainer was released from jail and is scheduled to appear in court for charges on July 13. According to Access Atlanta, Nivea is charged with driving under the influence less safe, reckless driving and driving too fast for conditions. The “less safe” addition to the DUI charge means that Nivea did not take a field sobriety test and police do not have a blood-alcohol reading for the driver.

After the incident, Nivea posted messages on her Twitter account denying that she was drinking and driving and that the “media and law” were being used against her. She further stated that she did not see the warning tape or traffic cones before hitting the tree at around 1:30 a.m.

Firefighters at the scene report being told by the singer that she had consumed three alcohol drinks at an event earlier in the evening.
