Georgia State Patrol looking for drunk drivers over holiday weekend

The Georgia State Patrol will be out in full force on Georgia's highways over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. The troopers will be looking for drivers who are driving aggressively, driving under the influence, speeding or are not wearing seatbelts. The stepped-up patrol will occur over the 78-hour period from 6 p.m. on Friday until midnight on July 4.

Police officer fired after he is arrested for DUI

This blog has discussed in previous posts how DUI charges can lead to the loss of a job. A DUI charge can be damaging to anyone's career because court dates and a driver's license suspension can make it difficult to get to work, not to mention how word of the charge may affect one's reputation at work. In certain careers, a DUI charge can be especially damaging, such as medicine, teaching or public service. For example, former University of Georgia Athletic Director Damon Evans was forced to resign following a DUI arrest. He was expected to be a role model for student athletes and had to leave when he set a bad example.

R&B performer, Nivea, charged with DUI in Atlanta

The popular R&B singer, Nivea, was arrested under suspicion of DUI in northwest Atlanta, Georgia, recently after she crashed into a downed tree with her car. The tree had fallen on the road after a storm, but was marked with yellow caution tape and traffic cones warning oncoming drivers.

"Jackass" star dies in car accident, not known yet if alcohol a factor

Ryan Dunn, one of the stars of MTV's "Jackass" shows and movies was killed in a car crash on Monday. Dunn, 34, and his 30-year-old passenger were both killed in the crash. It is not known whether Dunn was driving under the influence of alcohol, but he was drinking at a bar earlier in the evening and tweeted a photo of himself drinking with his friends. It is not known whether Dunn was intoxicated at the time of the crash. It will take a couple of weeks at least for toxicology reports to answer that question. Dunn was arrested once a few years ago for DUI, but the charges were eventually dropped.

Georgia man charged with DUI, vehicular homicide after fatal crash

A Georgia man has been charged with DUI and vehicular homicide after a motor vehicle accident Monday night that killed a recent graduate of Georgia Tech. Police say the accident occurred when the 42-year-old driver hit the motorcycle that was being driven by the recent grad. The young man was thrown from his motorcycle and hit by another car.

Flo Rida arrested for DUI, driving with suspended license

Hip hop star Flo Rida was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol last Friday. The rapper of the club hits, "Low" and "Right Round," was pulled over by police officers on early Friday morning around 4 a.m. when police say they saw him swerving his car. Police pulled him over and began to administer field sobriety tests, but Flo Rida told police that he could not do the tests because he had been drinking. Police arrested him. He was also arrested for driving with a suspended license.

DUI suspect's charges upgraded to homicide after passenger death

A man from Augusta was charged with serious injury by motor vehicle after a crash on June 4, but that charge has now been upgraded to homicide after his passenger died. The 37-year-old man has also been charged with DUI and with having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.

DUI charges dismissed against Braves pitcher

In a video in possession of the Georgia Department of Public Safety and reviewed by the Associated Press, Braves pitcher Derek Lowe denied drinking or racing after being pulled over by police officers in Atlanta at the end of April. Lowe refused to take a breathalyzer test and was charged with DUI and reckless driving. Prosecutors later dismissed the charges after deciding that they lacked the evidence needed to pursue a DUI case against Lowe.

Georgia golf cart drivers can be charged with DUI

Golf carts are a popular mode of transportation for many Georgia residents. Many young people also use golf carts as a relatively easy and inexpensive mode of transportation. However, people tend to think that golf carts are toys. But this is not the case. Golf carts are motor vehicles and they can be dangerous.
