Man on riding lawnmower charged with DUI

| May 9, 2011 | DUI |

A man was charged last weekend with driving under the influence after police found him allegedly driving his riding lawnmower while under the influence of alcohol. This is a new one for the blog, which has covered driving cars, trucks and boats while intoxicated, riding bikes and wheelchairs and even a horse while intoxicated, but never mowing the lawn while intoxicated. This man was arrested over the weekend after a neighbor reportedly called police apparently worried for the 53-year-old man’s safety.

According to WKRN-TV, the neighbor called police and reported that the man was stumbling around while getting ready to mow his lawn. The neighbor said that the man almost was run over by a car in his preparation to mow the grass. Law enforcement officers responded to the neighbor’s call and found the man visibly intoxicated. The man told police that he had had a pain pill and two beers before deciding to mow the lawn. The man has been previously charged seven times with DUI, which could make this a repeat DUI charge.

The 53-year-old Tennessee man was charged with public intoxication as well as DUI and brought to a county jail. Even though riding a lawn mower while drunk may not seem like a serious offense, repeat DUI charges can be particularly serious. For example, if this occurred in Georgia, the man could be charged with felony DUI for his seventh offense. In Georgia, he could also get mandatory jail time, a lengthy suspension of his driver’s license, and mandatory alcohol dependency evaluation and treatment.
