UGA Athletic Director's DUI Arrest One of Athens' Top Stories of 2010

The DUI arrest of former University of Georgia athletic director Damon Evans was one of Athens' top news stories of 2010. A recent article in the Athens Banner-Herald discusses the story's effect on the community of UGA and the greater Athens community as well as the aftermath of the incident for Evans and UGA's athletic program.

The article describes the incident as "surreal and sad" for Athens residents, and it includes an interview with the new athletic director, Greg McGarity. McGarity described the incident as one where nobody won. Evans was arrested for driving under the influence on June 30 in Atlanta. He was minutes away from a new $550,000 per year 5-year contract with UGA. Evans was forced to resign from his position after his DUI arrest and McGarity replaced him.

Evans has since found a new job in marketing and moved his family to Boston for the career change. He has a court date on the DUI charges scheduled for January 31 in Atlanta. McGarity said that Evans called him to congratulate him on landing the job. McGarity said that Evans still has many friends at UGA who understand he has gone through hard times and will still be there for him.
