DUI Arrest Costs UGA Athletic Director His Job

Damon Evans was five minutes away from beginning a new five-year contract worth $2.75 million as the Athletic Director of the University of Georgia when he was arrested on June 30 in Atlanta for drunk driving. A Georgia State Patrol officer pulled over Evans' BMW when he saw it cross the center line on Roswell Road.

According to the police report, Evans informed the officer more than once that he was the UGA Athletic Director, adding that he was not trying to bribe the officer or unduly influence him. He also asked the officer to let him off with a warning and drive him to a motel. The officer told him that he did not give warnings for DUI. Evans refused to submit to a breathalyzer and was arrested on charges of DUI, illegal lane change, and failure to submit to an alcohol test.

Evans held a news conference the next day to apologize to the UGA community for his conduct. He expressed his desire to keep his position at UGA, but it does not look like he will be given that chance. Sources have reported that Evans and UGA have reached a settlement that will include Evans' resignation.

Since Evans' DUI arrest, other embarrassing details about the incident have surfaced, including that Evans was in the car with an intoxicated 28-year-old, Courtney Fuhrman. The officer noticed at the time of the stop that Evans' had Fuhrman's panties in his lap. The 40-year-old Evans is married and the couple has two children.
