Woman Accused of DUI in Fatal Car Crash Holds Press Conference

| Jun 24, 2010 | DUI |

Christa Scott and her parents held a news conference today at the office of Scott’s defense attorney where they made their first public statements after Saturday’s early morning car crash that killed Jordan Griner, 24. Atlanta police say Scott crashed her car into the vehicle driven by Griner at the intersection of West Peachtree Street and 17th Street in Midtown. Griner had a blood-alcohol level  of .229, nearly triple the legal limit.

Scott has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, DUI and reckless driving. She was released from the Fulton County jail on Monday after posting $100,000 bond. Her attorney says that he does not anticipate Scott being able to plea to a lesser charge. If convicted, she could be sentenced to three to 15 years in prison.

Griner was an intern with Governor Sonny Perdue’s office. He had been out celebrating the end of his sixth-month fellowship with other interns. Griner had been the group’s designated driver. He had just finished dropping everyone off and was blocks from his apartment when the crash occurred.

Scott’s attorney said that he scheduled the press conference at the family’s request. He said it wasn’t about improving Scott’s image in the media or to garner sympathy. He said the purpose of the conference was the family’s wish to publicy express their deepest sympathies to the family of the young man killed. Scott’s mother said that they had been praying for the Griner family since the tragic accident occurred. Scott cried throughout the conference and her statements were barely audible. When a reporter asked how difficult the experience has been for her she said, “You have no idea, you have no idea.”
